BANKS - 'Serpentina'

7/10

During the release cycle of her third studio album 'III' BANKS was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Disease, an autoimmune condition that led to invasive medication to allow her to continue perform on stage. Throughout this time, she found herself in a sort of survival mode, in which she knew that this was either the end of her career, or just something she needed to cope with. Thankfully she found herself dealing well with the illness, which led to the inspiration behind her fourth full-length 'Serpentina', a record that is all about rebirth and new beginnings.

The snake-like theme behind the release is all about shedding one's former skin, as she now looks to reinvent herself within her current state of mind. This has led BANKS down an almost nostalgic rabbit hole, where she finds influence within the 90s and 00s R&B sound for her newest offering. While still looking to maintain the same forward-thinking and progressive ideals her music has always managed to possess, 'Serpentina' sees her find solace in her formative inspirations as she swoons and sweeps through broad and glossy cuts that look to mark the start of a new era for the artist.

While it is not as groundbreaking as some of the work she has produced in the past, 'Serpentina' makes for a brilliantly rich and vivid return to form. Showcasing more of her strong and driven persona within each single, she wears her emotions on her sleeve throughout this new collection and opens herself up more than we have ever heard her before.
