FKA twigs - 'CAPRISONGS'

7/10

Ever since she first emerged a decade ago with her breakthrough debut collection 'EP1', FKA twigs has always been one to pursue the lesser ventured avenue when it came to creating new and interesting aesthetics. Her three studio albums since then have proved her ambitions to explore her own distinctive direction, and delivered some of the most brilliantly abstract works in recent times. But after a flurry of new material throughout last year, she has now returned with her first mixtape 'CAPRISONGS', a release that is more about showing off the playful and adventurous energy she is known for.

While this still remains an official FKA twigs offering, it almost feels like a break from her usual output as she looks to step away from the more artful side to her sound, and instead create a collection of vibrant ideas and aesthetics, opening her up to more digestible efforts. The diverse cast of guest appearances from the likes of The Weeknd, Pa Salieu, Jorja Smith and many more add to the already eclectic nature of 'CAPRISONGS', allowing the artist at the helm to adapt and flip her intentions as she goes, delivering a broad focus that almost feels like the beginning of a new endeavour for her.

Working well much of the time, 'CAPRISONGS' is an enjoyable venture into a wider and more explorative subsection of FKA twigs' style. It may skirt the commercial arena more than she has done in the past, but still makes for a fresh and enticing listen from start to finish.
