Getting To Know... The Bloom

Lifted from their forthcoming new EP 'Something On The Water', 'Break' sees them return in stellar stye. Filled with a rich and dynamic atmosphere, soaring aesthetics, and some incredibly breezy vocals at the helm, it definitely feels like we will be hearing a lot more from this lot in the coming months.

So with the new single available now, we sat down with them to find out more about their background and what has inspired them most over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

Marta and Michele: Guitar

Antonio: Drums

Matteo: Bass

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

We now belong to multiple musical environments, though we listened to similar music when younger. Marta loved American songwriting and 60s blues-rock. Matteo and Antonio were more into classic rock, whilst Michele was more into funk-rock and west coast.

What was the first album you remember owning?

Marta: Babel by Mumford and Sons

Matteo: Abbey Road by The Beatles

Antonio: Mothership by Led Zeppelin

Michele: Ghost in the Machine by The Police

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

Roundabout by The Yes

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

We can’t say it’s a ritual, but our process is similar many times. Usually Michele brings an original guitar riff or melody, though sometimes (as for our new single Break) it’s a bass line from Matteo, and we then start to jam. We are lucky to have Marta, who is very capable of improvising melodies and lyrics while jamming, giving a shape to the new tune within a few minutes. Antonio is always focused on creating a correct and precise structure (in terms of bars, meters). This is the process that, united with Matteo’s awareness of harmony, usually brings us towards new original songs.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

Marta: Salvador Sobral & Tigran Hamasyan.

Matteo: Francesco de Gregori and Miles Davis.

Michele: Tedeschi trucks band and Paul Simon.

I’d say these answers are a reflection of our different influences which then blend together in our pop-rock sound.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

Marta e Matteo: Paul McCartney

Michele: John Mayer

Antonio: Jorja Smith

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

When we manage to express ourselves through music, the most rewarding part is seeing people understanding and appreciating our expression itself. This happens in two circumstances: off the stage, when you understand someone knows and appreciates our song, on the stage, seeing the audience enjoying our way of communicating and engaging with us.

And what is the most frustrating part?

Not being listened to, found or appreciated. Not for arrogance, but just because big efforts and progress are not always recognized, especially within the music industry. Moreover, we can’t avoid mentioning the pandemic situation: one of the most frustrating things is the distance from the audience and the Impossibility to play live. For independent artists, promotion is also very demanding.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

To make as many experiences as you can whilst studying as much as you can, but with a very important concept to remember: sometimes you have to forget and evade musical theory to create something personal and original. That’s our goal: to create an original sound that is an honest expression of ourselves.
