Getting To Know... Daniel Etherton

After cementing himself with a wealth of rich and vibrant efforts throughout the last year, emerging artist Daniel Etherton returns to the fold once again with his soaring new anthem 'Mona Lisa'.

Lifted from his eagerly-awaited debut EP 'Rewrote It', which is set to arrive later this year, 'Mona Lisa' makes for a brilliantly bold and euphoric listen. Capturing more of that broad and tender alt-pop sound he is known for, he is continuing his rise as one of the more compelling names doing the rounds right now.

So with the new single available to stream now, we sat down with him to find out more about his origins and what has inspired him most over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

The saxophone. I've got such a feint memory being in the back of my parent's car, driving to Disney and hearing smooth jazz on the radio.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

I've always had an eclectic taste in music, since I was a kid. Listening to emo, mainstream pop, rock - indie. My sister loves R&B, so that was quite prominent in my life growing up.

What was the first album you remember owning?

It was definitely a Now That's What I Call Music! one. A bunch of popular songs from the 90s.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

Daughter - Youth

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

A lot of writing outside of sessions starts with poetry to be honest. I always find it easy to get words down at first with a melody coming second but really depends on how I'm feeling.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

Lizzie Esau, Asa, Josef, Jamiroquai, Noah Kahan, Daughter.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

Daughter

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

The ability music has to connect people, especially when performing live. That deep emotion between the stage and audience - it just clicks and you can feel it.

And what is the most frustrating part?

Comparison

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

Not comparing yourself to others and remember how important it is to celebrate the small wins. Feel the joy!
