Getting To Know... Emily Ryan

Emily Ryan doesn’t need to shout to be heard. On her newest single 'All The Time', the Detroit-born, NYC-based songwriter proves that quiet can be just as powerful, especially when it comes to those late-night thoughts you can’t quite shake.

Written in Atlanta with producer Ghostkid, 'All The Time' strips pop down to its most cinematic core. It’s a track about the kind of obsession that sneaks in through silence, a loop of memories and moments that play over when the world finally goes still. What makes it hit isn’t melodrama, it’s restraint. It’s the honesty of knowing you’re still thinking about someone, even when you’ve told yourself you’ve moved on.

So with the new single out now, we sat down with her to find out more about her origins and what has been inspiring her most over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

Honestly voice, I was in choir my entire life and I really really loved what a big group of people could sound like with some practice. The other instrument I’ve always loved is piano, because it can do a million things and always made the most sense in my brain.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

I grew up listening to a little bit of everything. My dad was a big 80s rock guy so my music has a ton of influence of that. While my mom loved Cher and true pop glamor of the 70s. I had a lot of exposure to all genres of music. I think I always leaned pop and rock but I love to listen to hip hop also. Growing up in Detroit I have a sweet spot for Eminem.

What was the first album you remember owning?

The First album I ever owns was Oops!…I did it again. I LOVED that album and all things Brittney. That was really my start of wanting to be a rockstar. I was 5 when I got that.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

Oh there are many. I would have loved to have written you and I by lady Gaga or Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. Very different pieces but I think equally brilliant in very different ways.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

Not particularly. I find inspiration in all things around me. Real life as much as things I see in TV or Movies. I love to go into the studio with an idea and a line or two and collaborate to finish it. I think this habit gets me the best result so far.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

My favourite artist is Lady Gaga. I think she is just so brilliant and different and talented. I also love Ed Sheeran, I think he’s such an amazing singer songwriter and watching him preform an entire show with the loop machine is really really sheer talent. Recently ive been listening to a lot of Raye, Halsey and Mumford and Sons.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

Lady Gaga.

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

Playing shows I think is the most rewarding. People paying to watch me preform and taking time out of their day and spending their hard earned money to watch my art is really awesome.

And what is the most frustrating part?

It’s expensive. I’m independent and everything is expensive and its not easy to make money yet. It’s worth is but this is by far the worst.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

To just keep going consistency is really key here. And their right I’ve improved on all fronts, year over year. It’s not always easy but it’s worth it.
