Getting To Know... Mali Hâf

Following on from a flurry of rich and vibrant delights over the last few years, Welsh singer and songwriter Mali Hâf is back once again with her mesmerising new single 'Tara's Eyes'.

Channelling a wonderfully warm and sultry neo-soul vibe from start to finish, 'Tara's Eyes' sees the artist return in fine form. Jam-packed with sweeping tones, groove-laden textures, and her own captivating voice at the helm, this one will wash over you and leave you feeling rejuvenated by the end.

So with the new single available now, we sat down with her to find out more about her origins and what has inspired her most over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

Djembe drum, and African drum that my parents bought for me, from WOMAD festival.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

The Beatles, were my first love. However depends what you mean by younger, I loved pop music in Primary school like Kylie Minogue ,Beyonce and enjoyed my Dads folk music. Then my 90s Rnb and Reggae phase through out High School.

What was the first album you remember owning?

My best friend and I asked our Dads for Elvis gold and silver CD’s when we were 8 lol. And then I got my own out of my pocket money, Cara Dillon’s CD when I was about 9.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

I SAY A LITTLE PRAYER FOR YOU!!! - imagine writing that banger!!


Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

I meditate on Sarasswatti (the goddess of music, art and wisdom) this is if I’m feeling not very creative, she helps.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

Raveena, she’s incredible. But also Tiawa, she’s really inspired me recently.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

Greentea Peng (I’m very obsessed with her atm) and the legend DAVID BYRNE !!!!

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

That feeling of freedom when performing, connecting to my most authentic self.

And what is the most frustrating part?

To be honest, I shan’t lie….the financial bit…but money doesn’t bring you happiness - music does!

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

Chris Jenkins, who is an incredible producer in Wales once said to me ‘Every song deserves a place in the world. Even if not many people like it, it will always mean something to someone’ // in other words he was saying concentrate on those who love your music, not on the others.
