Kodaline - 'One Day At A Time'

7/10

Since first emerging with their debut album 'In A Perfect World' back in 2013, Irish pop-rock outfit Kodaline have always looked to create a bold and vibrant sound that transcends the fickle and short-lived trends of their time. While many of their contemporaries have been more concerned in trying to keep their direction a part of the fashionable musical zeitgeist, Kodaline are instead focusing on refining their given style and thus giving their catalogue a more timeless feel than most. So as they return with their fourth full-length 'One Day At A Time', it is clear that this aesthetic is still very much alive in them.

What stands out most about this new collection is how minimal and stripped-down it feels in places. Despite clearly have a ton of production and atmosphere injected into every single track, 'One Day At A Time' has this very clean and direct sound to it, giving it a far more intimate and vulnerable feeling than we would have expected. While their easy to predict formula of sweeping ballad-esque verses and soaring choruses remains the staple of this new release, they have been able to return with something comfortable and progressive that while never breaking their path, still sounds fresh and exciting throughout.

Kodaline will never be the most ground-breaking of acts in the world, but they have proven time and time again that they have a constancy that is rarely seen this far into a high-profile career. 'One Day At A Time' is a safe and easy record to get into, but still manages to pack itself with more memorable moments than most.
