London Grammar - 'The Sweetest Love'

7/10

Throughout their illustrious tenure to date, London Grammar have established themselves as one of the more revered additions to the UK's electronic music scene. Known for broad and ethereal soundscapes, elevated by the soaring vocals of singer Hannah Reid, the trio have since earned a strong reputation for adopting rich and atmospheric tones with everything they do. But after their much-loved 2021 LP 'Californian Soul', it feels as though a new dawn is rising as they return with their fourth studio album 'The Sweetest Love', a record that sees them adopt harder textures throughout.

While London Grammar's aesthetic has always been this subtle mix of bold production with more wistful songwriting, 'The Sweetest Love' sees them lean into those more anthemic moments far more regularly. Adopting this smooth and alluring presence that doubles down on the bass and drums as it plays, this new collection finds them in a brilliantly riveting guise as they look to add a more evolutionary spirit to their catalogue to date.

Although it may not have the same instant impact they have produced in the past, 'The Sweetest Love' still packs plenty of punch when it wants to. Feeling like a fresh beginning for the three-piece, London Grammar are back and continuing to innovate across this sprawling new outing.
