Nas - 'King's Disease II'

8/10

There have been very few rappers that can compare themselves to Nas. Over his near three decade reign as one of the most forward-thinking and progressive names on the scene, he has been responsible for elevating the tone and mainstream appeal of US-led hip-hop, and remained one of the staples of the industry since the early 90s. But not normally known for his prolific output, he now returns less than a year after his 2020 LP 'King's Disease' to deliver its follow-up 'King's Disease II', a record that goes further in the self-explorative nature of his sound.

It is hard to believe that Nas has remained so fresh and distinctive after all these years. His debut LP 'Illmatic' was no doubt a breakthrough moment for him and the scene at large, but his continuous pursuit of new ideas and avenues has kept his name relevant since then, and we are still seeing something different on 'King's Disease II'. Regularly breaking away from his smoother and beat-perfect verses, he occasionally tries his hand at a more contemporary flow, and sometimes aesthetic, to produce a direction that is one foot in his past and the other in his future, keeping the vibe of this collection ever surprising.

Nas has been one of those names that could throw out anything and people would still listen, but yet he has always looked to show that he is the best and better than anything around at that time. It has been the cornerstone of his success over the years, and 'King's Disease II' is another bold step forward for the rapper.
