After making a bold splash with their highly-praised debut album 'Silver Dollar Moment' back in 2018, Halifax-based outfit The Orielles had been lauded as one of the most original new acts to emerge that year. Their genre-bending and respective approach to influence gave many the impression that they were a sponge of the music industry, soaking up nearly everything they came into contact with in order to create a hybrid sound of their own design. But as we switch onto their follow-up 'Disco Volador', it is clear that the band have been refining their identity ever since then as they return with a truly psychedelic offering.

The band's first release was of course heavily drenched in the psych-rock sound, but not to the extent that this one is. 'Disco Volador' has this instantly nostalgic sound that seems to blend almost every major genre from the 1970s into one single style. There is an undeniable blend of psych, funk and disco running side-by-side on almost every track, making for a familiar feel but one we know we have never heard before. Their ability to find originality within pre-established styles of music is a wonder that only they could display, and they do it with a strong and vibrant swagger throughout.

It is genuinely hard to describe the sound of 'Disco Volador' in just a few phrases, but one thing we can tell is that it is a pleasure to listen to. Throughout its ten-track offering, The Orielles have this bright and youthful approach to musical discovery, which almost feels like we are being introduced to something new just as they uncover it. A fun and enjoyable listen that simply looks to do its own thing throughout.
