All We Are - 'Providence'

7/10

Since their earliest beginnings, the Liverpool-based trio All We Are have never been ones to conform themselves to one particular route or avenue with their sound. On both their self-titled 2015 debut LP and highly-praised 2017 follow-up 'Sunny Hills', the band have explored a multitude of directions including psychedelia, krautrock and post-punk, giving them a truly rich and exciting style throughout their career. And after three years of more self-discovery, they return with their next shapeshifting adventure 'Providence', a release that sees them take on a wonderfully bright and uplifting intention.

It may be due to their own multinational identity, with the three members originally coming from Ireland, Norway and Brazil respectively, but there is something so brilliantly distinct about the world that All We Are build for each of their studio albums. They have this unique and explorative guise that always looks to inject fun and excitement into each of their offerings, and 'Providence' is no different. With its technicolour approach to production and instrumentation, we are treated to a wave of sunny yet complex cuts that seem to follow in the footsteps of Tune-Yards and Cut Copy with their dazzling aesthetic.

And while it sometimes falter with some of its more mellow and simpler offerings, 'Providence' still makes for a thoroughly enjoyable listen from start to finish. Like a psych-pop carnival of sonic flavours, their latest work may be more unventured territory, but they have taken to it like a cold shower on a beaming summer's day.
