Beach Bunny - 'Emotional Creature'

7/10

Since they first started release music way back in 2015, Beach Bunny have always been ones to incorporate the classic pop tropes of the early noughties with a more progressive indie-rock twang. Their breakthrough debut album 'Honeymoon' in 2020 was a perfect example of their inventive spirit as it managed to meld some brilliantly raw and emotionally-charged songwriting with some thunderous and anthemic hooks. And after a few years to figure out their next move, they are back once again with their second studio album 'Emotional Creature', a record that continues that vibrant direction.

Although not much has changed sonically between these two albums, 'Emotional Creature' has a far more confident aura about it. The band are more willing to take chances with what they create on here, resulting in a wonderfully adventurous and captivating listen. Lead vocalist Lili Trifilio once again drives the band forward with her compelling presence and ear-piquing lyrics, giving this new collection a fresh and inviting feel that pushes their chosen aesthetic into even more unexplored territory than before.

While it may not have the instant grab factor of 'Honeymoon', there is still plenty of memorable moments littered throughout 'Emotional Creature' to keep its head above water. Beach Bunny have been clearly honing themselves prior to this release, and offer up another heady dose of their dizzying sound throughout.
