The Big Pink - 'The Love That's Ours'

7/10

In 2009, there was barely a moment that went by where we didn't hear The Big Pink's breakthrough single 'Dominos'. Whether it was the radio or on TV commercials, the song saturated the popular zeitgeist and launched the band into the stratosphere with their debut LP 'A Brief History Of Love'. But with their follow-up full-length 'Future This' in 2012 failing to live up to their original hype, the band disappeared into an almost unending hiatus. That was until they began to reemerge earlier this year with a flurry of new releases, resulting in their long-awaited third studio album 'The Love That's Ours', a record that looks to rebuild what they once had.

Despite the full decade-long break between releases, 'The Love That's Ours' surprisingly feels like no time has passed at all. The band's signature sound of broad and atmospheric indie-rock remains as timeless as ever as they feel at ease picking the mantle back up and pursuing another heady dose of raw and emotionally-charged offerings throughout. And while this new collection doesn't have the same instantly engaging feel as their initial LP, they have still managed to produce a brilliantly well-rounded and driven selection of gems that shows their fire never originally left them.

The Big Pink may have an impossibly high legacy in which to live up to, but 'The Love That's Ours' still makes for a rousing listen, brimming with warm and enticing ideas. Progressive and adventurous within its production, we hope that it won't be another ten years before they grace us with their presence again.
