BROCKHAMPTON - 'ROADRUNNER: NEW LIGHT, NEW MACHINE'

7/10

Over the last few years, we have watched as BROCKHAMPTON grows from a humble and cult-followed collective to one of the most essential names in hip-hop. Their 2019 collection 'GINGER' saw them reach their highest point yet, achieving commercial and critical success across the world. But with the pandemic putting pause on their plans for world domination, the group have since reverted back to their introversive and isolated ways to deliver their sixth full-length 'ROADRUNNER: NEW LIGHT, NEW MACHINE', a record that maintains their legacy to date.

In the build up to this release, it was announced that this would be the penultimate album from BROCKHAMPTON, with numerous members choosing to go their separate ways. So already we are treating this collection with a level of finality we weren't expecting. But despite the knowledge that they will be gone soon, they still manage to pack in the vibrant jams left, right and centre. Choosing to collaborate a lot more with outside artists than we are used to, this part curtain call feels like a bucket list of influences, with each idea explored with a fierce and determined grit to it.

Eclectic and incomparable throughout, 'ROADRUNNER: NEW LIGHT, NEW MACHINE' is another gold star release from their ever-progressive hip-hop collective. It may not have the same instantly engaging sound that they have shown before, but still manages to bring the same fire and energy they have shown throughout their careers so far.
