Caroline Rose - 'Superstar'

7/10

Over the last few months, we have seen US singer and songwriter Caroline Rose release a flurry of bold and impactful singles but it has only been since the release of her new album that they all seem to make sense. For her sophomore LP, she chose to pursue the concept route and deliver a collection of tracks all written from the perspective of a character who receives a mistaken phone call from the Chateau Marmont and decides to start their life over in the pursuit of fame. But the story is only one element of this broad and inventive new record as 'Superstar' sees her evolve to the next phase of her career.

While the narrative running through this new collection is intended to be the focus of your attention, there are still plenty of other moments on 'Superstar' that manage to capture the imagination of the listener. For a start, the warming and diverse approach to production leads us to compare her to the likes of Kali Uchis and Snail Mail with its almost psychedelic intentions. There is this theme of dream-pop and synthwave influences that seem to be littered throughout this new full-length, which helps create this bright and euphoric atmosphere that only adds to the release's forward-thinking approach.

Although it may not be her most perfect collection of songs, Caroline Rose has certainly given us something that we can see ourselves coming back to again and again. 'Superstar' is one of those rare records that only gets better with repeat listens, forever offering up something new and interesting that you never noticed the first time round.
