CHVRCHES - 'Screen Violence'

8/10

Ever since they broke through with their stunning debut album 'The Bones Of What You Believe' in 2013, CHVRCHES have remained at the forefront of the revived electro-pop movement of the last decade. While many others have come and gone in that time, they have remained a staple of the scene and shown their longevity through a string of vibrant releases. But while things have looked a tad shaky for them in recent times, they return with a renewed spirit on their fourth full-length 'Screen Violence', a record that brings back the urgency of their earlier work.

While their sound has always had this glittering and euphoric edge layered throughout it, their lyrical focus on more serious and passionate topics has been the standout aesthetic of their work so far, and 'Screen Violence' has this in bags. Each track looks to lure you in with its broad and pulsating production, but frontwoman Lauren Mayberry continues her charismatic persona at the helm, creating some truly memorable offerings. Building on what they have gone through over the last decade, this new collection is a firm and rewarding return to form from a group that have barely put a foot wrong.

There is something to admire about the consistency that CHVRCHES have demonstrated over the years. Despite not doing much to alter their original direction, they have managed to create a new release brimming with all the raw passion and gusto they have always shown, something that we rarely see from a group at this point in their career.
