Deap Vally - 'Marriage'

8/10

Ever since they first broke through with their stunning debut album 'Sistrionix' in 2013, Deap Vally have established themselves as a raw and uncompromising duo. Regularly focusing their sound on the bold and driven side of blues and alt-rock, they have this incredibly engaging style that has seen them garner fans from all around the globe. And after a quick return last year to collaborate with The Flaming Lips on their joint release 'Deap Lips', they now unveil their vibrant third record 'Marriage', a full-length filled with all the same shimmering charisma we love them for.

Arriving five years after their sophomore effort 'Femejism', 'Marriage' sees them in a more refined light. While they have earned a reputation for blistering hooks and thunderous production, this new collection sees them spread their creative wings a little further than we have heard in the past. Maintaining that aggressive stance throughout, there are far more moments on here that see them pursue a more groove-laden direction, something that allows us to really appreciate the depth of their sound and give us an insight into what their style may evolve into in the years to come.

In all, 'Marriage' stands as another excellent release from the pair. The pace and ferocity within this new offering barely lets up, giving us the chance to get truly swept up with it and feel the momentum build throughout. Hopefully it won't be another five years before they return again, but with tunes this good, we can sit and enjoy this one a little longer.
