Dry Cleaning - 'New Long Leg'

9/10

After spending the last few years in a mild cult obscurity, releasing a pair of fantastic EPs that went largely under the radar, London-based art-rockers Dry Cleaning have spent the last year building up their reputation for fresh and interesting post-punk-inspired gems. These last few months have seen the four-piece share a flurry of instantly engaging cuts after another, and now release their eagerly-anticipated debut studio album 'New Long Leg', a record that cements them as one of the most exciting bands we have heard all year.

From the very start, 'New Long Leg' looks to make its mark as a brilliantly exhilarating yet distinctly unique offering. The opening single and lead track 'Scratchcard Lanyard' sees frontwoman Florence Shaw channel her inner Kim Gordon as she croons her way through a blistering wave of energetic guitars and feverish production, setting the stage for what is to come. From there, the LP moves through a tectonic shift of powerfully raw and atmospheric offerings, all led through her wonderfully warming and comforting vocal style, creating a sound that never falls asunder.

It is hard to find a full-length that manages to encapsulate both artful intentions and commercial appeal, but 'New Long Leg' seems to have it in spades. It is almost like there is this untethered narrative running the length of this new collection, delivering chapters in a story that have no end, but still fill us with this ever-wanting desire to keep listening.
