Gaz Coombes - 'Turn The Car Around'

8/10

Since departing from his formative group Supergrass more than a decade ago, Gaz Coombes has quickly found a new lust for life within his solo material. While his work fronting one of the 90s most beloved outfits was largely a bold and energetic affair, he has begun to enter a more contemplative state in his new venture, churning out a flurry of rich and enticing releases as he goes. And after his third LP 'World's Strongest Man' became his most commercially successful outing in 2018, he is now looking to continue that driven direction on his fourth solo album 'Turn The Car Around', a record that sees him build his aesthetic more than ever.

Ever since his first pieces of solo material began to surface, it was clear that Coombes was determined to hone his songwriting chops and offer something with more substance than just another throwaway indie-rock anthem. This is the mantra of what we get upon 'Turn The Car Around'. Throughout each offering, he conjures the same atmospheric energy as Radiohead and Blur to produce a wonderfully sprawling release that builds and swells into some truly euphoric and heartfelt moments.

There is no doubt that 'Turn The Car Around' is one of his most accomplished works to date. With such confidence and prowess layered throughout his newest effort, listening to it feels like a warm and alluring embrace, something that we can definitely find ourselves coming back to again and again.
