Half Waif - 'The Caretaker'

7/10

Over the last few years, it finally feels like we have got a handle on producer and songwriter Nandi Rose aka Half Waif. With a broad and electrifying catalogue of euphoric offerings over her last three albums, the one thing that we can predict about where she plans to go is that she never looks to paint the same picture twice. So it comes as no surprise that her fourth full-length 'The Caretaker' is an even grander kaleidoscope of musical invention that never seems to dampen as it plays.

Built loosely around the premise of a groundskeeper maintaining an estate, 'The Caretaker' is less of a concept record and more of an examination of the human spirit in troubling times. Throughout this new collection, Rose dissects herself, partners, friends, and family through a warped and atmospheric release that showcases more of her own eclectic nature. Usually sticking close to her usual guise of lo-fi electronica, her voice takes us on a journey of personal self-discovery that highlights the most common of elements within all of us; the weight that can come from the most ordinary of impulses.

Half Waif has always been an artist who does things in her own way, but this somehow feels like a more freeing example of her work to date. Removing the pretence of expectation has allowed her to ponder more about her place in the world, and resulted in a captivating and enticing collection that holds more semblance to those listening than she may have anticipated.
