Kings Of Leon - 'When You See Yourself'

5/10

The timeline of Kings Of Leon over the near twenty year career has been a turbulent one to say the least. After generating huge cult appeal from their first three albums 'Youth & Young Manhood', 'Aha Shake Heartbreak' and 'Because Of The Times' near the start of the century, they finally crossed over to the mainstream with their world dominating fourth full-length 'Only By The Night', which cemented them as the international superstars we see today. But since then, they have had a rocky time reviving that former glory and spent much of their time trying to regurgitate what once worked for them again and again. Not ones to give up the ghost just yet, they share their latest collection 'When You See Yourself', a record that looks to bring some kind of resurgence to their sound.

Although this last decade hasn't been the most critically successful for the family unit, there have been glimmers of hope and progression within the largely forgettable output, and this seems to be the same pattern we see on 'When You See Yourself'. While they have never fallen to wretched depths of leftfield experimentation that some in their position find themselves in, they simply seem to trundle along with this tired and unimaginative desire to churn out meandering indie-rock croons that just don't have the same bite they once did. Although there are the odd flickers of bright delight, it never outweighs the filler and feet-dragging throughout.

That is not to say that Kings Of Leon have lost the principles of their sound, as 'When You See Yourself' quite clearly comes across as one of their own creations. But without any broad, bold or energetic intentions on here, it is hard to see them in the same light they once had and watch as they deliver another lacklustre offering.
