Let's Eat Grandma - 'Two Ribbons'

7/10

Throughout their previous two records, Jenny Hollingworth and Rosa Walton aka Let's Eat Grandma were always keen to showcase their devout friendship to one another through song. But in the years since their 2018 sophomore collection 'I’m All Ears', everything changed when Hollingworth lost her partner to a rare form of cancer the following year. Their partnership was tested like never before, but they eventually found a way to collaborate once again as their third studio album 'Two Ribbons' looks to set them as two independent spirits coming together to work through the pain.

Deciding to work separately for the first time in their career, 'Two Ribbons' is more about finding a strong connection within their music than anything else. While they have remained sonically tethered to their formative sound, this new release is about rekindling an experience between two people that have begun to break away from one another. But rather than spell any of that out to their listeners, there is a subtle nuance to their direction this time around, as we get to share within their personal feelings for one another without it coming across as overbearing.

There is this strong sense of sadness laced with hope throughout their latest full-length. While the two have always been able to convey strong emotion within their work so far, there is something truly genuine about listening to 'Two Ribbons'. You can tell that they truly care for one another but don't feel ready to end anything just yet.
