Mark Ronson - 'Late Night Feelings'

7/10

Since first introducing us to his sound with his debut album 'Here Comes The Fuzz' back in 2003, which saw him collaborate with a wealth of hip-hop stars, Mark Ronson has proven to be a true shapeshifter of musical innovation of the years. With no two albums sounding the same, the producer has always looked for a new direction in which to explore with every release. And while his 2007 LP 'Version' and 2015 record 'Uptown Special' had both entered the best selling albums list of their respective years, he is hoping that lightning strikes for a third time with his fifth full-length 'Late Night Feelings'.

In numerous interviews during the promotion for this album, Ronson referred to this as his "sad bangers" release, a collection of slow and despondent pop tunes that still carry plenty of weight behind them. And from the wealth of singles we heard in advance, it seemed like the perfect challenge for the beatmaker. Never really experimenting with the alt-pop sound before, he has taken to this project like a duck to water, unveiling one confident and enticing single after another. With its all-female list of collaborators, that include Miley Cyrus, Lykke Li, YEBBA, Angel Olsen and many more, this new collection has a very cohesive flow to it, giving it a short and sharp pace throughout.

While it lacks the memorable and exciting cuts that his previous full-length was littered with, 'Late Night Feelings' is still an incredible likeable release that sees the producer explore sounds that artists like Sigrid and Years & Years have proven to work. A solid return from a man who just seems so at ease with whatever he touches.
