MOURN - 'Self Worth'

7/10

Since the release of their much-loved sophomore LP 'Sopresa Familia' in 2018, more than just a bit has changed for the Barcelona-based outfit. With well-documented label troubles, the departure of formative drummer Antonio Postius, and a global pandemic affecting their release and recording schedule, it almost looked like the group weren't going to make it to this point. But with nothing but grit and determination to see them through, the now trio return with their third studio album 'Self Worth', a record that sees them offer up more fun and raucous anthems than we thought they had.

With preview singles 'This Feeling Is Disgusting' and 'Men' piquing our interest early on, we knew that their latest collection was going to be a little more than your run-of-the-mill indie-rock LP, and from an initial listen, it feels like they have delivered the goods. Bringing back that bold and anthemic direction and pushing its impact as far as it will go, 'Self Worth' sees the group in an almost renewed spirit, slinging high-energy riffs and choruses at every opportunity and creating a return that firmly suits their larger than life persona.

While not every track on here is a perfect slice of solid gold, their new full-length is still jam-packed with a determined power behind it, showcasing them as a resilient and proficient outfit throughout. 'Self Worth' may have been born out of a troubled existence but MOURN never seemed like ones to give up easily, and their latest material proves that.
