Mura Masa - 'demon time'

6/10

Ever since he first emerged with his breakthrough self-titled debut LP in 2017, producer Alex Crossan aka Mura Masa has been greeted as one of the most innovative names on the scene. With a fresh and progressive outlook towards his work, his 2020 follow-up 'R.Y.C' saw him move into an even more adventurous territory, regularly adopting tastes and flavours that rarely compared to his earlier material. But after a flurry of bold and inventive gems throughout the last few months, he has now entered a new phase within his direction with his third studio album 'demon time', a record that sees him at his most untethered.

Throughout 'demon time', we get to experience Mura Masa at his most free and uninhibited. While he has largely returned to the electronic base that filled his initial collection, the broad and soaring spirit that he lends to his newest release has an incredibly lofty appeal to it. While he has once again invited countless other artists to join him on his journey once again, there remains this driven thread amongst each of these cuts as he looks to showcase some of the most diverse and varied offerings of his career so far.

While it sometimes has trouble maintaining the strength and momentum in places. 'demon time' is still a largely enjoyable endeavour, filled with vibrant eccentricities. Fans of his earliest material will be most akin to this full-length as the sparkling spontaneity of his origins ring hard and fast as often as possible.
