Nothing - 'The Great Dismal'

7/10

Despite only unveiling themselves to the world less than a decade ago, shoegaze revivalists Nothing has shown themselves to be one of the most prolific and hard-working outfits of the moment. Leaving a string of bold and captivating works in their wake over the last few years, the band now remarkably return with their eagerly-awaited fifth full-length 'The Great Dismal', a record that sees them grow their sound into a broad and multifaceted venture with plenty of new ideas to explore.

While the band have usually found themselves more comfortable adopting the soaring and atmospheric post-rock aesthetic on recent releases, 'The Great Dismal' sees them explore more of the loud and raucous side of their direction. Keeping the dark and brooding texture they are known for and injecting a firm and thunderous production over the top has given their latest collection a solid shot in the arm. With blistering guitar hooks and a dense aura around every single, their latest record brings out their more adventurous guise and creates one of their most succinct collections to date.

With a clear and precise vision behind this new album, Nothing look to make their fifth outing more memorable than ever. 'The Great Dismal' is a fresh and vibrant offering that takes their knowledge from the last decade, and brings it shining throughout this new LP, delivering a driven and captivating release from start to finish.
