Psychedelic Porn Crumpets - 'Night Gnomes'

7/10

Over the last decade, we have come accustom to Australia's dominance over the psych-rock world. With bands like Tame Impala, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, and Pond gaining international traction for their distinct brand of woozy guitar hooks and breezy atmospheres, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets arrived late to the worldwide scene with the viral impact of their third studio album 'And Now For The Whatchamacallit'. But after a flurry of impressive bouts these last few years, they are back once again with their fifth full-length 'Night Gnomes', a record that looks to continue their blistering streak to date.

Arriving in the wake of their brilliant LP 'SHYGA! The Sunlight Mound' last year, 'Night Gnomes' looks to continue the vibrant energy that that release gave off. While it doesn't rely as heavily on fast-paced riffs as its predecessor, this new collection still manages to pack a punch whenever it can. Opting for a more soaring and textured tone this time around, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets now look to add a more sprawling edge to their sound as they drift between high-energy anthems and more easygoing moments, leading to a brilliantly diverse and captivating offering.

It may not have the same hit-to-the-head impact as some of their recent work, but 'Night Gnomes' still does an incredible job at moving their aesthetic into new and interesting avenues. Psychedelic Porn Crumpets have made a home on the peripheries of the psych-rock scene, and they sound extremely comfortable there.
