Real Lies - 'Real Life'

8/10

Since the disbandment of The Streets back in 2011, the British music scene has had a void that needs filling. A group that not only takes influence from a whole range of cultures across the British Isles but also embarks on a mission of social commentary in these turbulent times, Real Lies are a London-based trio looking to become the next major voice in self-referencing British music and their debut album certainly makes a positive stance for that position.

The slightly confusingly titled 'Real Life' is a rich and diverse release that sees the group venture into a variety of different musical territories yet still remain cohesive. Made up of new and old release, some of which date back as early as 2012, the album simply a collection of their output so far. Yet while its eclectic presentation can be explained by the time passed between the writing of each track, it certainly makes for a brilliantly original release.

It may not make them the next urgent band you need to hear but something tells me that isn't that important to Real Lies. Their sound is built around their cult appeal and to lose it would remove the heart and soul of this very poignant outfit.
