Regina Spektor - 'Home, Before And After'

7/10

Ever since she first emerged more than twenty years ago with her breakthrough debut album '11:11' in 2001, Regina Spektor has stood as one of the most chameleonic artists on the scene today. With each full-length release, she has looked to embark on a new sonic aesthetic, giving her one of the most eclectic and diverse back catalogues we have ever seen. And with a full six years going by since her previous outing 'Remember Us To Life', she enters her next musical stage of evolution with the adventurous new album 'Home, Before And After', a record that shows she is far from running low on new ideas.

Throughout this new collection, it feels like Spektor has been keen to only feature her most ambitious concepts to date. While there are plenty of moments that see her lean on her bold and progressive folk roots, there are fresh and experimental offerings scattered amongst the tracklist that see her produce some of her most engaging and explorative works of her career so far. And while the inventive nature certainly delivers some memorable cuts throughout, it does sometimes fall under the weight of its own outlandish ideals, creating a very polarising listen.

But despite the occasional bum note here and there, 'Home, Before And After' still makes for a largely enjoyable and enticing return. Brimming with sweet and tender moments that really connect with the heart, Regina Spektor maintains her reputation as a truly unpredictable name on the circuit.
