Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - 'Raise The Roof'

7/10

When Robert Plant and Alison Krauss released their first joint album 'Raising Sand' in 2007, it was as near perfect to an album you could get. The unlikely pairing proved so many cynics and critics wrong by unleashing one of the most renowned modern albums of the last few years, and breaking down borders for what many expected of them. Now after fourteen years since that initial impact, the duo are back together once again to unveil their sophomore effort 'Raise The Roof', a record that looks to continue the good work of its predecessor within a more contemporary light.

Much like their last release, 'Raise The Roof' is also a collection of covers reinterpreted by the pair's warm and mythical approach. Doing their best to revamp these classic works into a more haunted and atmospheric guise works exceptionally well in nearly all areas, giving the album a broad and driven feel that always looks to invite you in. Both Krauss and Plant give their all to each and every moment, aiming to highlight the soft and versatile nature of these original songs and breathe their distinctive and ethereal nature throughout this sweeping new offering.

While many could argue that this is too much like the last record, 'Raise The Roof' still manages to deliver plenty of impressive moments that warm the heart and the soul. These two clearly have an extremely special connection and it only feels right that they should continue to explore this aesthetic as far as it will go.
