Shenanygans - 'On Monte Verita'

7/10

Ever since they arrived with their breakthrough debut single 'Count On Me' earlier this year, Switzerland-based outfit Shenanygans have worn their influences firmly on their sleeves. Inspired by the classic retro sound of the 60s and 70s, the band's output since has been this bright and swaggering array of upbeat grooves, perfect for those looking to reflect on a simpler time. And with the buzz still building for them, they now deliver their eagerly-awaited debut album 'On Monte Verita', a record that explores more of that riveting appeal.

While the band's classic style is ever-present throughout this new collection, 'On Monte Verita' still manages to find a variety of contemporary aesthetics in which to weave into its dynamic direction. With the occasional nods to blues-rock and indie-pop laced in-between their groove-filled ventures, their first full-length manages to not only pay homage to those greats of yesteryear, but also sees them developing their own unique sound around it, making for an unpredictable and surprising listen from start to finish.

Familiar yet unique in equal measure, 'On Monte Verita' introduces Shenanygans to the fold in a rich and enigmatic fashion. Moving with this subtle elegance between each of the tracks, it feels as though this aesthetic will serve them extremely well as they venture off into the new music arena in the months ahead.
