Squarepusher - 'Damogen Furies'

7/10

Since emerging as an experimental producer in the mid 90s, Squarepusher aka Tom Jenkinson has always looking to push the envelope of electronic music and this latest release is no different. While he has always aimed to portray a theme throughout all his studio releases, whether it be serene soundscapes or minimal instrumentation, 'Damogen Furies' seems to hark back to his formative years, delivering an absurd blast of high-tempo electronics designed to melt the brain.

Described by the beatmaker as a hybrid between Miles Davis-era jazz and dance music, this new album does an extremely competent job of melding the two very different genres. Taking the erratic and unstructured core style behind jazz and using it to programme a number of electronic instruments, you can see how these two influences make up the direction of this new record and help in harnessing that classic Squarepusher sound.

Bonkers in its delivery and pounding from the start, 'Damogen Furies' is most certainly a true Squarepusher record rather than one of many of his concept releases. It's brazen in its delivery but at times can come across as conventional rave record. What is clear though, his fans will absolutely love it.
