ARTIST OF THE WEEK: No.382 - Chanel Loren

After spending the last few years building and developing her sound, South East London-born but Sydney-based artist Chanel Loren is now ready to introduce herself to the world with her fantastic debut single 'Playlist'.

With a direction that blends the aesthetics of alt-R&B, UK garage and indie into one luxurious texture, 'Playlist' showcases a wonderfully inventive name emerging on the scene right now. Addressing what she refers to as a "situationship", her initial efforts stands as a fresh and confident introduction, brimming with creativity and ingenuity throughout.

Speaking about the new offering, she said, "I wrote 'Playlist' a few years back after reflecting on a 'situationship' I had with a guy. Things got messy and I was struggling to express my emotions. I wanted to understand those feelings so I made a playlist called 'Him'. I never wanted him to hear it... It was kind of my way of getting closure about the situation and knowing I'm not the only one who has experienced heartbreak.

"I was asked to be part of a choir for KWAME's project, which is where I met his co-producer Nikoss and we decided to do a session. As soon as I arrived he said 'I made this beat for you'. As I listened it gave me a nostalgic feeling with contemporary quirks. I started humming the melody and idea of 'Playlist', which I’d written a few years before and suddenly realized this was the right home for it. The beat reminded me of a lot of the UK garage tunes I loved growing up in South-East London and it was a cool way to pay homage to my childhood".
