ARTIST OF THE WEEK: No.519 - Y

London’s rising stars Y have signed to Hideous Mink Records and SO Recordings, announcing their self-titled debut EP ‘Y’, which is set for release on the 4th April 4th. The EP is being previewed by the lead track ‘Why’, following its debut on BBC 6 Music with Steve Lamacq.

Founded by Adam Brennan and Sophie Coppin during a period of isolation, Y is a genre-defying collective drawing on the duo’s unique synergy and a melting pot of influences. Described by the band as everything from “wonk rock” to “Gameboy thrash” and “Egyptian wedding music,” their sound defies categorisation. The group features members from or linked to Fat White Family, Meatraffle, and Pregoblin, cementing their roots in the capital’s thriving underground scene.

Speaking about their debut single, the band explained: “‘Why’ is a song that calls everything into question—it’s an ode to the unanswered, endless questions, from the trivial to the deeply philosophical. Saxophone dominates the chorus, while synth and guitar take the place of traditional lyrical verses, as we ultimately found that THE question can only be answered through music.”

Y will celebrate the release of ‘Why’ at their home turf, The Windmill, Brixton, on the 24th January, before joining Fat Dog and Keg on a February tour. They will cap off their spring with a headline show at London’s iconic 100 Club on the 24th April. Known for their exhilarating live performances, the band promises to leave audiences captivated, continuing to build their reputation as one of the most thrilling new acts on the scene.
