Baio - 'Dead Hand Control'

8/10

Since the release of his highly-praised debut solo album 'The Names' in 2015, Vampire Weekend bassist Chris Baio has always looked to push the boundaries of modern electro-pop. With his formative band still going strong, this project has always seen itself as a more experimental outlet that relies less on commercial success, and more about exploring the possibilities within his own direction. And after a four-year break to focus on his bigger commitments, he now returns with his third full-length 'Dead Hand Control', a record shows more of his adventurous avenues.

Since its incarnation, the Baio project has been seen as more of a bridge between the indie-pop and electro-pop worlds. Using a heady mix of diverse instrumentation and production, he always looks to create something that is distinctly unique but always fun and enjoyable for the listener, and that is exactly what we get on 'Dead Hand Control'. Channelling the rich and vibrant aesthetics that have shrouded his career so far, this new collection looks to deliver a fresh and exciting example of his current mindset, something that is simply intoxicating from start to finish.

While fans of his project will find plenty to love on here, 'Dead Hand Control' opens itself up to new audiences as well, creating this bold and uplifting release that is just looking to have a good time throughout. Baio may still be in the shadows of Vampire Weekend, but there is a quirkiness you can only find here, and that is what makes this more than just another VM side-project.
