Biffy Clyro - 'The Myth Of The Happily Ever After'

7/10

Throughout the last two decades, Biffy Clyro have grown from humble beginnings to become one of the world's most in-demand outfits. Regularly performing in stadiums around the world, they have created a sound that searches for the anthemic and euphoric sides of modern alt-rock. But with the last year putting the brakes on their and everyone's plans, they have opted to deliver a new full-length collection that isn't quite a new album, but instead a blistering and furious continuation of their 2020 LP 'A Celebration Of Endings', something that better reflects the direction they should be pursuing in these circumstances.

While they have been very clear that this is not an album of sorts, 'The Myth Of The Happily Ever After' certainly has the same raw and driven intensity of their work over the years. To say that they are separating themselves from their usual guise would not describe this new material at all, but instead it feels like they have gone back to their more cacophonous origins than anything else. Big riffs and the start-stop instrumental fills are back in force on this new release, as the trio look to unleash their frustrations about the state of the world today and deliver something they feel truly passionate about.

Emotionally engaging and aggressively strong, 'The Myth Of Happily Ever After' sits as one of their most captivating offerings in years. While they may have been treading a bold and inviting formula in recent times, it feels like this release is a love letter to their most devout fans, something that is pure and brutally honest from start to finish.
