Black Country, New Road - 'For The First Time'

7/10

2021 has barely had a chance to get into the swing of things, and we already have one of the most contentious records of recent memory. After building up an initial round of buzz with their debut single 'Athen's, France' at the start of 2019, the group have since divided opinion over their sound, with many simply unsure how to take them. And while this debut album looks to show their bare bones to the world, 'For The First Time' showcases them in an unwavering and uncompromising light that sees them stay true to their distinct and something captivating direction.

Even after just a few tracks, it is clear why so many have trouble understanding what this band is all about. With a mixture of experimental rock, post-punk, and jazz all thrown together, 'For The First Time' has a style that just hasn't been tried before. It is this bright yet sorrowful medley of influences that on paper seem like too much, but regularly surprises us in its invention intentions. There is obviously a strong love for Nick Cave on this release, and while that poetry-led texture remains at its heart, it still offers up some wonderfully warm and intricate instrumentals to carry us away.

While its explorative nature cannot be denied, 'For The First Time' does struggle on occasion to be completely engaging and captivating within its path. Moments that should puzzle and bemuse us sometimes come off as pretentious, and create a jarring style that feels like it is still in its infancy. A solid beginning nevertheless, with plenty to wrap your head around again and again.
