Brijs - 'Glitra'

8/10

After first emerging around this time last year, fast-rising producer Brijs proved to be one of the best undiscovered gems of the last year. With every single that came out, he was slowly growing his reputation for fresh and inventive psych-pop-inspired compositions, and became one of the most notable additions to the new music arena in 2020. Now after sharing more than half of the cuts from this new full-length in advance, he returns to release his long-awaited debut album 'Glitra', a record that provides an intense snapshot of his direction over the last twelve months.

The story behind 'Glitra' is just as interesting as the music within it. After spending much of his life as an inner-city kid, producer Hugo Brijs decamped to a rural mansion called Cecil Court, shacking up with a group of strangers in order to find a new side to himself. This time was the prime inspiration behind the record, and resulted in some of the most captivating and exciting pieces of music we have heard in months. Keeping a focus on this newfound influence, the new LP is this strong and vibrant release that showcases his dexterous flair for uplifting songwriting and makes for a wonderfully enjoyable listen from start to finish.

He may not have completely broken through to the commercial popularity that he deserves yet, but 'Glitra' is one of those rare examples of untethered invention that we rarely see these days. With its broad and textured direction married effortlessly with his own warm approach to production, it has this incredibly engaging feel to it that never seems to let up.
