Chris Lafe King - 'Neuroemergent'

7/10

Chris Lafe King’s debut EP 'Neuroemergent' is a remarkable distillation of lived experience into six tracks of raw, intimate, and vividly expressive “journalpop.” Released to coincide with ADHD Awareness Month, the collection is a personal manifesto chronicling the journey from burnout and hyperactivity to clarity, self-acceptance, and creative resurgence.

Opening with the defiant 'Wall of Awful', the EP sets its tone immediately as anxious energy is reframed as agency. The track moves with a pulsing intensity that mirrors the inner turmoil of ADHD and burnout, while the refrain “Breathe in, breathe out, reframe” becomes a mantra for resilience. King’s approach is immersive as we are drawn into both the weight of his struggles and the exhilaration of reclaiming control over them.

'Hyperfocus (Ride the Wave)' captures the exhilaration and disorientation of obsessive creativity. Rapid-fire lyrics and cascading melodic lines convey the rush of inspiration and the consequent exhaustion, yet his control of dynamics ensures the song never feels overwhelming. In contrast, 'Time Blind' slows the pace, offering reflective spaces where rhythm, melody, and introspection intertwine, evoking the dislocation and eventual reconciliation with time that many with ADHD experience.

The EP also balances intensity with gentleness. 'The Wonder Drug' critiques societal pressures and perfectionism, while 'Soft Machine' and the title-track celebrate self-acceptance, gratitude, and the reframing of neurodivergence as a source of creativity and strength. Throughout, his vocals are candid, textured, and emotionally resonant, with production that emphasises immediacy without sacrificing polish.

'Neuroemergent' is a soundtrack for anyone navigating mental health challenges, neurodivergence, or the search for personal freedom. Chris Lafe King has created an EP that feels lived-in, lived-through, and alive, a listen that turns vulnerability into empowerment and chaotic thought into art.
