Coldplay - 'Everyday Life'

6/10

Although they have always been closely associated with political and charitable efforts across the world since their earliest beginnings, Coldplay are one of the few major bands that had yet to release any new material since the 2016 uprising of both Trump and Brexit. Their 2015 full-length 'A Head Full Of Dreams' was a rich and uplifting affair that many expected would be turned on its head given their connections to the societal zeitgeist, and while there are plenty of despondent moments of this new release, 'Everyday Life' is a double album that looks to split their upbeat and more sombre aesthetic in two.

Continuing the 2019 fad of the double LP, 'Everyday Life' very much sees itself as two different approaches to the troubles and turmoil of today's partisan world. While the first half of the record makes waves in delivering a slow and meandering sound, channeling their more atmospheric intentions, the second set of tracks is a bold and uplifting affair that is more like the Coldplay we have heard in recent years. Staying away from their usually over-produced and anthemic direction, this new release is a far looser and laid-back approach to their style, making it a more refreshing listen for both die-hard and fair-weather fans.

Yet despite its forward-thinking and explorative nature, 'Everyday Life' very rarely has much to shout about. While there are moments, such as the singles 'Orphans' and 'Arabesque', that really showcase an encouraging and diverse band at the helm, much of the record is awash with half-baked ideas and loosely arranged compositions that just don't measure up to the quality we know them for.
