Common - 'Black America Again'

6/10

While he hasn't made the same impact outside of his native land, US rapper Common is easily one of the biggest names in American hip-hop, and has been for almost twenty years. And while he has always played a part in the political agenda of black America, this new release sees him go all out on the eve of one of the country's most divisive elections in decades.

Taking a page out of Kendrick Lamar's book by using inspiration from the older eras of black music, 'Black America Again' is mix of classic instrumentation wrapped up in a collection of contemporary beats and influences. With help from guests such as Stevie Wonder, John Legend, and others, Common takes the preverbal bull-by-the-horns and delivers one poignant speech after another, turning himself from rapper to preacher in some of his subject matter.

It is clear that this album was something that needed to happen in light of what has been going on in America of late. And while it doesn't quite have the same punch as some of his peers on the scene, its relevance is something that can not be ignored and definitely sets the tone of conflict his country currently feels.
