Deap Vally - 'Femejism'

7/10

The two-piece has certainly been the public image of rock music in the last few years. Since the LA duo released their debut album 'Sistrionix' back in 2013, we have been inundated with huge and heavy pairings each attempting to out-do each other in the noise stakes. But now returning with their second studio full-length, Deap Vally are now looking to secure their claim as the loudest and most out-of-control duo of the lot.

The awkwardly-titled 'Femejism' delivers an endless flurry of fuzzed-out guitars and pounding drums, mostly played at the perfect head-banging pace. With a heavy influence of blues in their work, many have compared them to The Black Keys, which seems very apt for this new release. However, the tenacity and downright aggression from these two is a charm all of their own and is what separates them from the more commercial names you may be thinking of.

This new release is an angry, hot-blooded explosion of an album. Each track follows a similar and simple formula in order to create an illusion of direction, but really, this record is just a vented release of frustration and animosity. Something the pair do exceptionally well.
