dwn bad - 'Good Luck Have Fun'

8/10

There’s something refreshingly unfiltered about 'Good Luck Have Fun', the new EP from Houston-based outfit dwn bad. What started as a solitary project for Derek Silva has evolved into a full-bodied force; a band with teeth, texture, and the kind of ragged sincerity that’s harder and harder to come by in a world glossed over by algorithms and filters.

At its core, dwn bad thrives on tension as sharp-edged guitars slash through a rumbling low end, while Silva’s vocals ride the edge between melodic vulnerability and an almost confrontational rawness, reminiscent of The Strokes' Julian Casablancas. There’s no polish here, and that’s the point. The songs pulse with the electricity of imperfection, channelled through a lens of emotional candor that makes each track feel both bruised and brave, especially on its dynamic opener 'Try And Try Again'.

The EP’s title 'Good Luck Have Fun' reads like a sardonic blessing; one part gaming lingo, one part existential shrug. And fittingly, these songs grapple with the unpredictability of life in the 2020s. Such as the disconnect between our inner chaos and outward projections, the grind of rebuilding after burnout, and the quiet power of forging connection through noise.

dwn bad doesn’t try to fix this mess, it simply looks to document it. And in doing so, 'Good Luck Have Fun' offers a jagged kind of comfort: a reminder that sometimes the most cathartic thing you can do is crank the volume and let the distortion speak for itself.

dwn bad's new EP 'Good Luck Have Fun' arrives on the 20th June.
