Norwich's $ebbuku has delivered a six-track manifesto that feels like catching lightning in a bottle, where conscious hip-hop meets post-punk rebellion in a collision of raw authenticity and musical sophistication. Built around the creative vision of Sebastian Bates, Juvenile is a love letter to artistic freedom, wrapped in a sonic blend that refuses to be boxed into any single genre.
The opening monologue 'A Case Study' sets the tone for the rebellious nature of the EP—ending with the line "the rebellious teenager" introducing the character before bursting into the second track with explosive energy. The previously released single 'Call the Bluff' hits with an almost Dizzee Rascal Tongue ‘N’ Cheek era feel, showcasing $ebbuku's ability to balance sharp social commentary with moments of levity.
The lead single 'Juvenile' stands as the EP's emotional centrepiece—a rich tapestry of sprawling double bass, boxy drums, brass, piano and biting guitar that creates the perfect backdrop for Sebastian's intense observations on youth and authenticity. 'Jackanory' takes the tempo down but keeps the energy high, while the EP closes with 'Ignorance is Bliss' and the heavy 'Don't Turn it Up'.
What makes Juvenile so compelling is its fearless approach to genre-blending. $ebbuku brings together lo-fi conscious hip-hop with sprawling, fierce intensity, seamlessly weaving live instrumentation with inventive electronics and well-placed sampling.
