Gas Station Boner Pills - 'SIMPhony: First Movement'

7/10

There’s no subtlety to 'SIMPhony: First Movement', and that’s precisely the point. Gas Station Boner Pills lean fully into their reputation for unfiltered, high-impact punk, delivering a release that feels as much like a live-wire performance as it does a recorded project.

Structured as the opening instalment of a larger, multi-part album rollout, this first “movement” sets the tone with a sense of immediacy and intent. Rather than presenting a polished, front-to-back statement, the band opts for short bursts of energy designed to hit quickly and leave a lasting impression.

Musically, the trio (now expanded to a four-piece) operate within a raw, rhythm-forward punk framework, but what separates them from more traditional acts is their commitment to pacing. There’s very little breathing room here as tracks surge forward with an almost theatrical urgency, driven by tight percussion and punchy guitar work that prioritises momentum over intricacy. The result is a sound that feels deliberately unrefined, but never unfocused.

Lyrically, the band continue to embrace humour as a central device. Their writing thrives on exaggeration, absurdity, and a kind of self-aware irreverence. While that approach won’t resonate with everyone, it’s undeniably consistent with their identity. The comedy is embedded into the structure of the songs, shaping both delivery and tone.

As an introduction to the larger 'SIMPhony' project, this release does exactly what it needs to: it establishes energy, character, and intent without overextending itself. It’s loud, chaotic, and unapologetically direct, offering a snapshot of a band more interested in impact than perfection, and fully aware of the space they occupy.
