What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

It would have to be the piano mainly since it was my first instrument. I’m not a master at it to this day, but it’s what’s kept me swooning for more than 2 decades.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

When I was younger around 6-8, my parents put on a lot of Bee Gees and it’s what I listened to for a big chunk of my adolescence. So, I would say 70’s pop? But then as I progressed into middle school, I went through my Linkin Park & My Chemical Romance phase like most of us did and kept loving other types of music as I got older.

What was the first album you remember owning?

Parachutes by Coldplay

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

So many… but if we’re going by one it’d be Roads - Portishead.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

For me, if I want to get into the zone of finding musical inspiration, it will usually happen by throwing myself into the studio. I like to read lyrics, so sometimes I would follow along to the lyrics of whatever song I’m listening to and perhaps stimulate my brain to come up with something poetic, but true to me. It’s mainly listening to other music. It’s what I need to do in order to have something come out of me.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

I discover so many artists every day, but the artists I currently have on rotation now are Lea Sen, Yeule, Art School Girlfriend, Sebastian Roca, and Maria Becerra. They are all incredibly talented!

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

My life would be complete if I could open for James Blake or the xx.

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

From my experience, it’s contributing to the artistic community and being able to throw your voice out there. Also having your supporters show up for you. It’s incredibly reassuring to see the impact your music is making in your community. It’s what motivates me to move forward.

And what is the most frustrating part?

Sometimes struggling to get heard. Rejection. Not knowing the right people. I ultimately make music because I want to be heard, and one of the most challenging parts of being an independent musician is establishing yourself, which can involve everything I mentioned. It’s mostly a trial-and-error process. You learn as you go, but having the right resources is very important.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

You need to have really thick skin to be a musician. If you get rejected, it’s never personal. You have to accept that not everything will go smoothly and that you somewhat have to be persistent if you really want to take music seriously. Do as much research as possible. Look up resources. Work with people who are willing to invest in your craft. Patience and consistency are key. Never lose hope.
