Getting To Know... Cellz x Blue Glass

After originally coming together for their formative debut single 'Dream On' at the start of the year, a release that was praised by the likes of Notion and Jazz FM, Cellz x Blue Glass are back once again with their latest effort 'I Saw Her On The Beach'.

Bringing back another wonderfully smooth and breezy direction throughout, 'I Saw Her On The Beach' makes for a wonderfully rousing listen. Coupling sweet and lofty jazz-inspired grooves with some wonderfully calming vocals makes this new offering perfect for lazy days under the summer sun.

So with the new single available now, we sat down with them to find out more about their origins and what has been inspiring them lately.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

As a listener, the piano. As a player, the guitar.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

I had (and still have) a wide variety of influences. Classical/Orchestral, Soca, Rap/Hip-Hop, Metal and House/Dance music were among my favourites growing up.

What was the first album you remember owning?

The Ecleftic by Wyclef Jean. Although I can’t say ‘own’ as I borrowed it from a friend and it just ended up staying in my possession.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

There are so many, but the first one that comes to mind is Reflection by Tool.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

Sometimes I’ll take my guitar to a beach or a quiet scenic area and play until something interesting comes out. Other times I’ll sit at my work station and try to imagine how an emotion I’m feeling could be expressed with music and go from there.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

Weval and Chrome Sparks on repeat.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

Gorillaz.

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

Playing with others, especially if it’s an unexpected improvisation that everyone’s enjoying. Being part of the performance as it evolves and everyone adapts to each other's playing styles and nuances is fantastic. All the better if there’s an audience.

And what is the most frustrating part?

When differences in taste and opinion can’t be overcome and a project stalls and dies.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

“If this is what you’re passionate about, you should focus on it. Don’t waste time with things that you don’t want to pursue.”
