Getting To Know... Dr Wippit

Chicago-bred guitarist and vocalist Dr Wippit steps forward with his groove-heavy new single 'Yup', a punchy rap-rock cut that’s been years in the making. Lifted from his album 'For Everyone', the track blends swaggering confidence with a DIY spirit, fusing MIDI-driven basslines, live guitar, and layered keys into a sound that feels both nostalgic and forward-thinking.

Drawing influence from acts like Beastie Boys and Gorillaz, 'Yup' thrives on its infectious groove and self-assured energy. Built entirely in FL Studio before being elevated with live instrumentation, the track reflects Dr Wippit’s hands-on approach and genre-blurring instincts, landing somewhere between rap, rock, and alternative hip-hop.

So with the single available now, we sat down with him to find out more about his origins and what has been inspiring him most over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

While I did play some clarinet, sax and drums in school band, I can’t say I “fell in love” with an instrument until I picked up the guitar. It was like having a karaoke machine, I could just strum the chords to a song to sing over and I’m ready to go!

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

As a kid I really enjoyed listening to all the records my parents had from the 50s and 60s. As I got older and started scanning radio, I really got into harder rock and rap music which really matched my own energy.

What was the first album you remember owning?

I got my parents to get me Introducing The Beatles at a local department store, I recognized it as one we didn’t already have at the house and songs like “There’s a Place” and “A Taste of Honey” were magical to me because they only existed on my album.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

Honestly there are many, one that comes to mind quickly is “First Day of My Life” by Bright Eyes. So many good metaphors in there and just a great love song.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

I usually start with developing a chord progression on the guitar, and putting together an instrumental recording with some drums and bass to accompany. Then I listen to that in the car for a while and figure out what it’s going to be about.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

Now that pretty much everything is available on streaming, I often go back and listen to albums I never got to by older artists, lately it’s been the early Bruce Springsteen albums, Harry Nillson and Zach Bryan as well.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

Right now I’d say Pearl Jam

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

As someone that struggles with being “in the moment”, being a musician really helps with this. It’s hard to be somewhere else while you’re in the middle of a song.

And what is the most frustrating part?

Finding new audiences and getting them to engage with your original music.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

Leave everything on the stage. If you’re playing a full set and you’re not physically or emotionally drained when it’s done, you didn’t give it all.
