Getting To Know... Found Instruments

After spending last year releasing a rich and vibrant array of breezy delights, singer and producer Jack Joseph aka Found Instruments is now kicking off 2021 in style with his latest gem 'Aren't You Glad'.

Channeling the same smooth and woozy vibe as Tame Impala and Toro Y Moi, 'Aren't You Glad' makes for a wonderfully textured and engaging return. Bringing together a mix of glimmering aesthetics alongside his own tranquil vocals, his newest release spells huge promise for the artist in the months to come.

So with the new single doing the rounds, we sat down with him to find out more about his background and what has inspired him most over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

Drums - I just wish I lived somewhere I could have a drum kit set up, one day maybe.

What was the first song that inspired you to make your own music?

Probably something by The Clash or The Beach Boys.

What kind of music did you love as a teenager?

Definitely some embarrassing stuff in my early teens. In my late teens I really got into Neil Young and Bob Dylan. That’s when I got passionate about songwriting.

What do you find is the best environment to find inspiration for your music?

Any usable space and some time to work in it is what’s most important to creative people I think. The recording studio and rehearsal space are a wonderful thing but both feel like a luxury at the moment. I’m lucky to have a spare room I can work in and a bit of time to do so.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

I’ve been on a huge Bowie kick the last few years - I’ve always liked him but the more you dig in, he just gets better and better. I really think he’s hard to top.

How many of your songs have you written about people in your life?

A few, but more often it’s just a feeling or a vibe I’m trying to capture.

What has been the most unusual moment in your career so far?

Just that anyone likes this weird music I make in my little box room is unusual to me.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

John Grant seems like a nice guy, or Richard Hawley - just people I’d like to meet really.

If you weren’t a musician, what other path do you think you might have taken?

Well, I have a day job - I’m a support worker, so probably that.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

Try not to obscure the bit that makes it sound like you, even if that’s uncomfortable. A producer friend told me that once and it’s something I try to keep in mind.
