With his solo electronic project, Frankie Alpha has built a sonic playground where restraint battles impulse, and genre conventions are cheerfully abandoned in favor of pure creative expression. Born from rural influences yet now crafting for the club, this UK-based producer's artistry thrives in contradiction; merging acid house foundations with progressive house ambitions, and maintaining meticulous precision while embracing beautiful chaos. His latest single 'I'm All Over The Place Right Now' is not only a perfect encapsulation of his creative philosophy, but also his most adventurous production work to date.
On 'I'm All Over The Place Right Now', Alpha takes what began as a straightforward acid house experiment and morphs it into something far more complex and unpredictable. Starting as a relatively measured-tempo exploration, the track then fragments into passages that nod to electronic pioneers like Aphex Twin and The Prodigy, before building to a riotous crescendo that's equally at home commanding festival main stages or soundtracking intimate after-hours gatherings.
As one half of alternative duo Dope Rooms and a multi-instrumentalist shaped by everything from The Chemical Brothers to Radiohead, Alpha represents a new breed of producer who sees electronic music not as a destination, but as a vehicle for boundless experimentation. So with his debut EP on the horizon and a string of seasonally-aligned releases building anticipation, we sat down with Frankie to discuss his genre-defying approach and the beautiful unpredictability that defines his sound.
What was the first album you remember owning?
‘And Justice For All’ by Metallica.
What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?
‘Everything In Its Right Place’ by Radiohead.
Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?
I recently started meditating for half an hour before working on a new composition. This helps me keep a clearer vision of the entire track, from the outset. It’s a pretty handy tip.
Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?
Right now, I’m listening to a range of stuff. Things like Athletic Progression, Billy Nomates, Koreless, Max Richter, Ezra Collective. More for mood than inspiration.
If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?
Would be cool to open for someone like FKA Twigs or Fever Ray with an ambient, slow tempo set.
What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?
The most rewarding part about being a musician is the escapism of composing and the unparallelled joy it brings.
And what is the most frustrating part?
The most frustrating part is not being able to share things you’re working on and immensely excited about until your perfectionist brain has announced them finished.
And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?
Best piece of advice I heard was, don’t waste a day not creating. You’re lucky if you have a creative brain, so don’t take a day off from luxuriating in that gift. Doesn’t mean feel pressured to, just enjoy it!
